As America’s only state highway that prohibits motor vehicles (except emergency vehicles), M-185 is truly a bicyclist’s paradise. This route circles the entire perimeter of Mackinac Island, Michigan, where motor vehicles have been banned since 1898.
At just 8.2 miles in length, M-185 is certainly not the longest state highway in the nation, but given its non-motorized purpose, it is certainly the most unusual one. It passes through the heart of downtown Mackinac Island, past impressive hotels and fine restaurants, aside the waters of Lake Huron, through Mackinac Island State Park, and past stately Victorian-era homes. The entire route is visual treat at every turn!
If you ever visit Mackinac Island, be sure to bring your bike or rent one of the many thousands available on the island, and pedal your way around this lovely oasis of beauty, history, and charm which is positioned amid the clear blue waters of Lake Huron. Enjoy!
